Dice Towers – What are they, how do you use them, and how do you choose the best?

If you’ve ever shopped for game night and RPG accessories then it’s likely that you’ve come across dice towers. They are an absolute premium item. And you can find them in all shapes and sizes –  immaculate wooden designs (just scroll up) to dragons to DIY plans for making them from a pringles can!

If you’re on this page, you’re either interested in buying one or trying to find out just what the hell they are for, and how do you decide which one to get. Clearly we’d recommend one of ours as they make amazing additions to your tabletop, but read below to find out more about dice towers so that you know what you’re getting into.

What is a dice tower used for?

A dice tower is generally used in games like D&D, board games, or any game where dice are rolled to ensure fair play. Rather than rolling dice themselves, dice are dropped through a structure that randomises the rolls for the player. Doing this, any bias on how the dice are rolled, dropped or thrown is taken away.

They can also be used to assist people to roll dice who are not necessarily able to do so comfortably or without pain. Every multiplayer tabletop game is designed to be inclusive; just think about playing Monopoly or Snakes and Ladders as a kid. The fun of the games is because you’re playing them with other people. If you or your friends or family struggle to roll dice, that doesn’t mean they should be excluded from the fun. That is where a dice tower can come in handy.

Finally, and we’ll come on to this further down, they are a statement piece. Some players love to have their tower for every roll, some reserve theirs for the most important rolls. Either way, a dice tower being deployed on the tabletop shows people that you mean business.

How does a dice tower work?

Dice towers are designed to randomise your rolls. They are powered by gravity: you drop the dice in the top and they come out the bottom. The rolling effect is created by disrupting the fall of the dice and spit a result out at the bottom. Some do this with one or more layers that dice bounce off on their way to the bottom. Others use chutes, slides, and miniature staircases.

They also mostly come with a catchment area for where the dice come out. For ones like ours, we provide a fitted tray for the dice to roll in (that can be used separately if you like) that the tower folds down into. Some of the more diorama-style ones (like the dragon dice towers, Baba Yaga’s hut, skulls, magic books, etc.) have a smaller, built-in landing area for your dice.

However they are designed, the end result is the same. Dice rolled successfully! And you and all your players can be sure that the result was as fair as it is possible to be when rolling dice.

When to use a dice tower

When you choose to use your dice tower comes down to the way you like to roll dice. If you like to roll all your dice through your tower then you make sure you have it on that table and ready to go at all times! Don’t let anyone stop you! This is especially useful for wargames where you will be doing a lot of dice rolling. Its also good for games where dice rolling always has the same meaning, which you’ll usually find in board games like Settlers of Catan. There is never any more or less tension on rolls compared to TTRPGs.

You might not use your tower for every roll, and that’s when you choose the second method. Some people like to save using the tower for really important moments. If you’ve ever watched Dimension 20 you’ll see they use a similar technique. You can grab the dice tower out for those very special, critical, fateful rolls. As a DM, if you roll behind the screen you’ll sometimes want to roll in front of it to let you players see the outcome. This is a great time to use a tower. What better way to show that what was meant to be is what happened by taking the roll out of your hands?

This dovetails nicely with another use for the dice tower that we spoke about earlier, and that’s as a statement piece. There are few things as satisfying to gamers as “out-nerding” other gamers! So whether or not it’s only for the special rolls, a tower, especially a well-crafted wooden one, can be used when you want to prove that you have the best gaming setup!

What makes a good dice tower?

By now you’re getting the idea that there are a lot of unique dice tower designs. But how do you tell which ones are the good ones? There are a few fundamental things that all towers should have. They should be functional for your needs and your allow dice to fall safely. There are also and some specifics that come down to personal preference and your situation.

Firstly, they should allow you to roll dice comfortably! When you’re looking for a dice tower, make sure that they will fit your dice. Product photography can be deceptive so make sure you check dimensions or find “in use” footage. They also need to be balanced and sturdy enough to take a lot of dice rolled through them. The last thing you want is for your tower to fall over or fall apart when you need it most!

Next, somewhere for the dice to land is basically a must. When you roll dice with your hands you have control of how fast you roll them. With a tower you don’t. So unless you are happy having your dice spilling across the table or having to stop them with your hands, make sure they have a way to stop your dice without you influencing the roll. After all, what’s the point of removing your bias if you then have to influence the roll? Some brands will try to upsell you a tray at a premium. We include our fitted tray as standard because it is a rolling system. (A note on fitted trays – if the dice tower and tray don’t fit together then it will be a lot more painful to get them to game night so try to get ones that do).

As for your personal preference, no one can decide that but you. However, there are some things you should consider. Are you travelling to play? Then you’ll need something that fits into your storage for when you’re on the move and won’t get damaged. So you might want to think twice about most of the diorama-type towers. However, if you’re a fan of 3D printing then they might be right up your street as you can easily get dice tower STLs online.

And finally, the question is also “who makes a good dice tower”. Good dice towers are designed precisely and made reputably and with craftsmanship. There are hundreds of examples of dice towers available online but just because you find them on sites like Etsy doesn’t automatically mean they’re great (except for us because we’re there too!). Too many sellers are drop-shipping products described as “handmade” that are clearly mass produced and imported. Find sellers you trust. We gamers love high quality accessories – so make sure that you’re confident that when you buy a dice tower that it’s been made with the quality that its price tag demands.
